The Mexico vs USA World Cup qualifying match will take place at the Crew Stadium in Columbus this Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 5:00 PM Pacific. The Mexico vs USA game is always the highlight of the Hexagonal, this encounter will be even more intense than usual. After Mexico’s shocking home loss against Honduras, El Tri is desperate for a win, a loss or even a draw would make the possibility of going to the World Cup without the need for a playoff minimal.
Chepo should have been fired after Mexico went three games at the Estadio Azteca without winning. Or when Mexico went out in the group stage at the Confederations Cup. Or when El Tri was knocked out by Panama in the semifinals of the Gold Cup. But, nope, the FMF decided to stick with him, and now we have this awful mess.
The match against Honduras was a do-or die encounter, and, well, Mexico isn’t dead yet, but it’s pretty close. After the historic Aztecazo at the hands of Honduras, Chepo left Mexico with just 8 points after seven matches, trailing Honduras (10 points), USA (13 points), and Costa Rica (14 points). Yup, you’re reading that correctly, there are three teams in front of El Tri, leaving Mexico, for now at least, in fourth place. To refresh your memory, only the top 3 teams in the Hexagonal will go to Brazil, the 4th placed team must play New Zealand for a spot in the World Cup.
With just three matches remaining, it means, that if Mexico wants a shot at going to Brazil without the need to play a playoff, it must defeat the USA in Columbus. Although a draw would be considered an excellent result, considering the history between these two teams, and Mexico’s awful form, it still wouldn’t be enough. Mexico needs all 3 points.
The one good thing coming from the loss against Honduras was that Chepo de la Torre was finally fired (can’t believe he didn’t quit, shows the type of character he is…), and replaced by his assistant, Luis Fernando Tena. With just 3 days in between the Honduras and USA game, it is unlikely Tena will make any big changes in the tactics. However, removing Chepo from the locker room might be enough to get El Tri motivated.

The USMNT is also coming from a loss, and one of the worst games they have played in the Hexagonal, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Costa Rica. Nonetheless, the USA has 13 points and will likely qualify to the World Cup with just 1 more win; nothing would be sweeter for US fans than to qualify by defeating Mexico.

Klinsmann had to make a couple of changes to the roster: Joe Corona, Brad Davis, Jose Torres and Clarence Goodson were added to replace a couple of players. Jozy Altidore, Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler are suspended for the match against Mexico, while Michael Bradley is injured. The absences for the USMNT are quite significant. Nonetheless, the USMNT has the home-crowd advantage, talented replacements, and doesn’t have the pressure that Mexico will be in.
Mexico vs USA Prediction
I’ll put it plain and simple, a loss for Mexico will deny Mexico any possibility of finishing in the top 3 spots of the Hexagonal. Even a draw isn’t enough. Mexico needs to win. The Mexican players will be under tremendous pressure, but defeating the USA in Columbus is not an impossible task. Mexico will have to play a perfect game, look to dominate the ball, create scoring opportunities, and play well a full 90 minutes.
I believe that finally getting rid of Chepo will revitalize the Mexican players, and greatly improve their performance. Furthermore, the USMNT will be missing several key players, this should be another positive for Mexico. However, history is on the side of the USA, Mexico has never defeated the USA in Columbus.
The match will be intense. Mexico knows that anything but a win dooms them to the playoffs. Klinsmann’s players have been playing great all summer long (except for that last match), and will be looking to seal the qualification to Brazil. In the end, the Mexico vs USA match will end in a 1-1 draw. Without the necessary 3 points from Columbus, Mexico will be looking for a miracle in the last 2 matches.
