The second edition of Jose Mourinho’s reign at Stamford Bridge will begin with the Chelsea vs Hull City match this Sunday, August 18, 2013 (8:00 AM Pacific). Mourinho’s first stint with Chelsea was from 2004 to 2007, where he obtained two Premier League titles, one Carling Cup, one FA Cup, and one Community Shield. Sunday will mark the start to a new era in which Chelsea will attempt to relate, if not improve, on the Portuguese manager’s first stint.
Chelsea has been quiet during the transfer season this summer. The team did not have any major players leave the team; however, they did sign German striker, Andre Schurrle, as well as midfielder, Marco van Ginkel. These signings will allow Mourinho to have depth in his squad, but most importantly, it will create more competition among players in the team who want a starting position. Schurrle is still very young at 22, but he will provide pressure to Fernando Torres in case the Spaniard does not have a succesful start to the season.
Hull City will make their return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2009-2010 season when they were relegated. The team coached by Steve Bruce will have much to demonstrate not only against Chelsea, but throughout the season if they want to remain in the top tier. Hull City made several signings in the off season, where Tom Huddlestone was their biggest incorporation. This team will style defensive systems early on in the season to try and obtain form and confidence, therefore a tie against Chelsea will be a huge morale boost for a team favored for relegation.
