Chelsea vs Monterrey FIFA Club World Cup Preview

The Chelsea vs Monterrey semifinal match for the FIFA Club World Cup will take place this Thursday, December 13, 2012 (2:30 AM EDT) at the International Yokohoma Stadium in Japan.  Monterrey got to this stage after defeating Ulsan Hyundai 3-1 on Sunday, a match Monterrey dominated. Chelsea, on the other hand, will play its first game of this short tournament, and is the favorite to win the match. Will a jet lagged Chelsea succumb against the talented Mexican side?

Victor Manuel Vucetich’s squad is playing its second FIFA Club World Cup tournament in a row, and has plenty of experienced players on the team- you won’t see any star-struck guys on the Monterrey side. However, the Rayados are coming off a very mediocre season, barely getting into the playoffs, and being promptly eliminate by eventual Liga MX champions, Tijuana.

Nonetheless, Monterrey demonstrated that they traveled to Japan with the hopes of accomplishing something big. Monterrey easily defeated Ulsan Hyundai 3-1, thanks in big part to Cesar Delgado’s excellent play, who scored two goals. Without Humberto Suazo’s powerful striking ability (out with an injury), Monterrey must rely on strong teamwork and defense in order to have a shot at overcoming Chelsea.

Chelsea will show up with a long list of stars: Torres, Lampard, Cech, et al. On paper, this squad is supremely superior to Monterrey, and everyone would expect Chelsea to cruise over Monterrey  However, Chelsea’s squad will be jet lagged, while Monterrey has been in Japan for 10 days, and is coming off a morale-lifting victory.

Chelsea vs Monterrey Prediction

Monterrey will likely give up the ball to Chelsea, hoping to play a good defensive game and waiting for counterattacking opportunities. Chelsea will thus be forced on the attack, the English squad will be expected to convincingly defeat the Mexican side. I expect a tight game that will ultimately end with a slim victory for Chelsea; Monterrey will be a proud opponent and will not lose easily.  The Chelsea vs Monterrey game will end 2-1 for the English squad.
