The Costa Rica vs Guyana match will be played on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 9:00 PM EDT at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose. Costa Rica clinches a spot in the final qualifying round with a win, and unless El Salvador defeats Mexico, would go through with a draw or loss as well. Guyana is already eliminated and has no motivation to play well other than honor for team and country.

Costa Rica – key win in San Salvador

Last Friday in San Salvador, Costa Rica needed at least a draw to remain in contention for a spot in the hexagonal round. They did one better and defeated El Salvador by a score of 1-0, silencing El Cuscatlan and getting half a ticket to the final CONCACAF qualifying round. Now, all they need is to defeat Guyana, the worst team in Group B: 17 goals allowed and just one point in five matches.

If Costa Rica fails to defeat Guyana, these are the three scenarios that would occur:

#1. Mexico defeats El Salvador. Costa Rica goes through to the final round even with a loss against Guyana.

#2. Mexico and El Salvador draw. Costa Rica goes through even with a loss against Guyana.

#3. El Salvador defeats Mexico. Costa Rica is eliminated if it loses against Guyana. Costa Rica goes through with a draw against Guyana, unless El Salvador defeats Mexico by 4 or more goals.

As you can see in the scenarios described above, it is nearly impossible for Costa Rica to not make it to the final round. If El Salvador were to surpass Costa Rica somehow, it would qualify as the soccer miracle of the decade.

Guyana has only earned one point so far, and there’s little chance they will play a perfect game against Costa Rica, when they really have nothing to play for. The Costa Rica vs Guyana match will end in a 4-1 win for Costa Rica, ensuring a spot in the hexagonal round for the Ticos.

Television: The Costa Rica vs Guyana match will not be televised in the United States.
